About Us
To foster and encourage the sport of model aviation in Western Australia in all of its diverse forms, that include design, construction, testing, flying and competing. Model aircraft include planes that are trainers, and flying for relaxation. They can include scale replicas of full size aircraft that include aircraft of the military and civil aviation from petrol and methanol internal combustion propulsion, to ducted fan and turbine jets. Early model aviation included the very popular "control line" aircraft which is still popular today. Other models include helicopters of all sorts, from models, to scale models and turbine powered scale models. Another rapidly growing face of the sport is drone racing. This is an exciting competition where first person view, (FPV) uses a headset video feed to place the radio control pilot (who is on the ground) in the perspective of the pilot of the drone.
Gliding is another facet of model aviation. This field ranges from chuck gliders to competitions in speed, duration and altitude with gliders of all sorts including scale and ranging in wingspan from 2m to 7m. GPS triangle racing is where model gliders are flown over preset course (triangle) aided with GPS data downloaded from the aircraft to the pilot with the aim of completing as many laps as possible in a given time, whilst navigating the course and searching for lift to regain height lost while traversing the course.
This is not all, because there are model aviation enthusiasts who fly for relaxation or competition in indoor venues throughout the country.
Most aeromodellers have a number of models, the limit being their budget and scope of interest. Many are content with flying smaller models exemplified by those available in hobby shops or online, many of which are now constructed from foam, and a electric powered. Others build their own, and others buy kits in various stages of completion and finish them off.
The hobby/sport at clubs provides a point of social contact for people of similar interests. Members have the opportunity to train newcomers, participate in club activities and organizations. Members can choose to participate in state, national and international events, organizations and competitions as volunteers, judges as well as participants.
Activities: Model aircraft building, model aircraft flying, model sports with club, state, national and international level competition in all aspects of the sport.
