Northern Surgical Care

Northern Surgical Care is led by Dr Ashok Gunawardene, a specialist general surgeon with expertise in upper gastrointestinal conditions and gastrointestinal endoscopy. He has developed his skills across healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Australia. His approach is evidence-based, with a strong focus on clear, supportive communication to ensure patients feel informed and confident throughout their care.

Dr Gunawardene performs a wide range of procedures, including laparoscopic weight loss surgery, gallstone management, and minimally invasive hernia repair. He is also GESA-accredited in both upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy.

In collaboration with Liora Health, the practice provides a multidisciplinary model where patients benefit from coordinated care involving dietitians, psychologists, and ongoing follow-up to support long-term health outcomes.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Gunawardene contributes to surgical education as an Examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and teaches surgical skills to junior surgeons through RACS programs. He holds a PhD in surgical research, with published work exploring the relationship between systemic inflammation and colorectal cancer outcomes, ensuring that his practice is guided by the latest scientific evidence.
