Masonic Lodge Centre

The largest Masonic Lodge that occupies this
temple - the Southern Cross Lodge No. 18, United
Grand Lodge of Queensland - was founded and
dedicated on 6th January 1870, and is the oldest
Freemason Lodge in the Toowoomba and the
Darling Downs area. Southern Cross Lodge is
virtually a continuation of its parent Lodge, the
Darling Downs Lodge of Harmony, which was
formed on 1st August 1867. However, in spite of
its name, the Lodge of Harmony was less than
harmonious and had its fair share of troubles and
disagreements. After a stormy existence of only
three years it was dissolved on a petition to the
District Grand Lodge of England.
