About Us
Meet Sam – the operator of Currawong Music Therapy.
Sam spent his early years on the Western Downs where he completed his schooling. He then completed undergraduate studies at the University of Queensland (St Lucia) before completing his Masters of Music Therapy at the University of Melbourne. Sam has been a Registered Music Therapist (RMT) since early 2018.
To many, music therapy is still a bit of a mystery. Here's a helpful brief definition - "Music therapy is a research-based allied health profession in which music is used to actively support people as they aim to improve their health, functioning and well-being. It can help people of all ages to manage their physical and mental health and enhance their quality of life." - Australian Music Therapy Association
Since 2018, Sam has worked in the community mental health field, supporting people with chronic and severe mental illness to flourish in their community. Working from a strengths based, recovery oriented approach, he enjoys getting to know the unique attributes of everyone he works with and helping them to achieve their goals. Sam has experience in team leadership and management, quality improvement and compliance, leading a team of 10+ staff to delivery high quality, sustainable services in a unique environment.
Sam also has experience in supporting refugees and migrants in the Toowoomba community and loves the opportunity to connect with others from many different cultures. His upbringing has lead to an appreciation of what it entails to access services in regional areas of Queensland and looks forward to sharing his music and skills beyond Toowoomba. Sam enjoys serving in his local church in Toowoomba, and the many local hiking spots to explore.
