About Us

The Philhellenic League was created for:

• Greeks who have roots in Greece, Cyprus, Turkey and elsewhere

• Non-Greek lovers of things Greek

All are equally welcome!

The Philhellenic League is a free, inclusive and non for profit social network for the enjoyment and enlightenment of it's members. Membership is comprised of Australians from all walks of life, backgrounds and ages. Activities include: going to exhibitions, lectures, museums, music events, restaurants and more.

So what does Philhellenic mean?
Philhellenic is derived from the term 'PHILHELLENE' (Greek: ΦΙΛΕΛΛΗΝ, from ΦΙΛΟΣ - PHILOS, "dear one, friend" + 'ΕΛΛΗΝ - HELLEN, "Greek") describing both non-Greeks fond of Greek culture and Greeks who uphold their culture.

The Philhellenic League's main objectives are to:
• Encourage all members to schedule events, have an input and influence the group's development
• Develop sustainability into the future by attracting new members who share the group's interests
• Remain independent by not accepting any forms of commercial marketing and political or religious proselytizing
• Build the bonds of friendship within our community while demolishing prejudice, stereotyping and xenophobia.
• Objectively explore the culture, history and language of the Greeks
• Explore the diversity of Melbourne's Greek culture
• Facilitate the provision of online resources

The success of the Philhellenic League is only as good as the input and participation of it's collective membership, which ultimately depends on each member:
• Participating in, and occasionally organising and leading events
• Developing a community and team spirit
• Being proactive and positively influencing the group's development
• Spreading the word about our group so more people can join in
• Having fun!
