About Us
Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are lifelong developmental disabilities characterised by marked difficulties in social interaction, impaired communication, restricted and repetitive interests and behaviours, and sensory sensitivities.
ASDs include autistic disorder, Asperger’s disorder and pervasive developmental disorder – not otherwise specified, which is also known as atypical autism. Sometimes the word “autism” is used to refer to all ASDs.
The effects of an ASD can often be minimised by early diagnosis and with the right interventions, many children and adults with an ASD show marked improvements.
Psychologists specialising in ASD can assist with assessment, diagnosis and treatment.
Assessment and diagnosis involves interviewing parents, carers, and the child, completing structured observations in the child’s natural environment and at the clinic, and completing a number of standardised tests to aide diagnosis and to identify the child’s strengths and difficulties. A report is prepared to assist your paediatrician in making the diagnosis.
Treatment is aimed at individual skills building and assisting parents to manage any social, emotional, or behavioural difficulties they are experiencing at home. This includes:
- Social skills training
- Emotion skills training including learning to manage difficult feelings including anger, anxiety and depression
- Toileting and self-care problems
- Tantrums and behavioural issues
- Sensory issues
